Rent and buy with confidence.
The vast majority of people on MyRent are genuine. A few aren’t. These habits take a few minutes and keep you on the safe side of every deal, whether you found the listing here or anywhere else.
If you see any of these, stop.
Any single one of these is reason enough to pause and ask questions. More than one almost always means a scam.
- Asked to pay before viewing the property
- Owner/agent is 'abroad' and can't show you in person
- Pressure to pay quickly so you 'don't lose it'
- Payment by wire to a personal account, gift card, or crypto
- Price far below similar properties in the area
- Refuses a video call or won't answer simple questions
View the property in person first
Always see a property (or send someone you trust) before paying anything. Photos and virtual tours are a starting point, never a substitute. If you're told you can't view before paying, treat that as a red flag and walk away.
Never pay a deposit or rent before signing
Don't transfer a deposit, first month's rent, or a 'holding fee' before you've viewed the property and signed a written agreement. No legitimate landlord or agent needs money to 'reserve' a place sight unseen.
Avoid irreversible payment methods
Be very wary of requests for bank wires to personal accounts, cash by courier, gift cards, crypto, or money-transfer services like Western Union. These are almost impossible to reverse. Prefer traceable payments tied to a signed contract.
Check who you're dealing with
Licensed agents on MyRent carry a Verified or Licensed badge with a registration number. Look for it. For private owners, ask for ID and proof they own or manage the property. A quick video call where they're standing in the property also helps.
Watch for prices that are too good
A seafront apartment far below the going rate is the oldest trick in the book. Scammers use a great photo and a low price to rush you into paying. If a deal feels urgent and unusually cheap, slow down.
Keep the conversation on the record
Agree the important terms (price, deposit, what's included, move-in date) in writing. Don't let a deal drift entirely onto a phone call where nothing is recorded. A written trail protects both sides.
Meet safely for viewings
Viewings are usually fine, but use common sense: go during the day, tell someone where you'll be, and bring a friend if you can. Trust your instincts: if a situation feels off, leave.
Protect your personal information
Don't share copies of your ID, payslips, or bank details until you've verified who you're dealing with and you're at the contract stage. Never share passwords or one-time codes with anyone, for any reason.
